Primary Temperature Calibration
The primary temperature laboratory will directly realise the International Temperature Scale of 1990, (ITS-90) in order to disseminate the temperature scale or to provide a calibration service of thermometers directly to the ITS-90 fixed points.
National Measurement Institutes NMIs
A National Measurement Institute (NMI) such as NPL in the UK, PTB in Germany or NIST in the US are key to national and international temperature metrology and will maintain national standards and provide international traceability.
Commercial Primary Laboratories
Outside of the National Temperature Laboratories many commercial temperature calibration laboratories will provide commercial calibration services to primary temperature standards offering low uncertainty temperature calibration.
How Isotech Can Help with Primary Temperature Standards
In addition to our range of equipment to calibrate industrial thermometers and our range of comparison equipment for the secondary we have a full range of equipment for the Primary Laboratory, including primary temperature standards (ITS-90 fixed points cells), furnaces and maintenance equipment to realise the ITS-90 cells, standard thermometers and primary thermometry bridges. We can calibrate these devices and our calibration uncertainties are the smallest, accredited to ISO 17025 by UKAS.
ITS-90 Fixed Points
Isotech manufacture, calibrate and supply primary temperature standards from the triple point of argon, -189.3442°C to the freezing point of copper 1084.62°C. Our water triple point cells have a history of over 50 years, and can be provided with an accredited calibration certificate with an uncertainty as low as 0.000070°C.
Maintenance Apparatus and Metrology Furnaces

Reference Standards and Measuring Instruments
Standard Platinum Resistance Thermometers
The ITS-90 specifies the Standard Platinum Resistance Thermometer, SPRT, as the interpolation device over the temperature range from 13.8033 K to 1234.93 K. Isotech offer a range of long stemmed SPRTs, which are used from the triple point of argon to the freezing point of silver. Isotech has a long history of making SPRTs to the Silver point (Model 96178) and this experience was combined with new research to produce the new copper point SPRT (Model 108462). Our Model 670 is our most popular model, specifically designed to give optimum performance up to the aluminium point.
Measuring Instruments
The Isotech microK thermometry bridge has displaced earlier technology and in independent comparisons has demonstrated the best performance. The innovation of the microK was recognised with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the innovation category. The microK bridge makes ratio measurements comparing the unknown SPRT resistance to a standard resistor. Isotech can supply and calibrate Standard Resistors and have a Resistor Maintenance bath to hold the Standard Resistors at a known and stable temperature. We have a unique solution to calibrate thermometry bridges, the Resistance Bridge Calibrator, RBC which can calibrate bridges to an uncertainty of just 10 ppb.
